In March of 1868, John Muir arrived in San Francisco and immediately set out by foot to discover the wonders of the Sierra Nevada for the first time. That historic journey led to the creation of Yosemite National Park.
145 years later, Restore Hetch Hetchy invites you to mount your bike and replicate Muir’s historic journey while raising funds and awareness for the campaign to bring his beloved Hetch Hetchy Valley back to life. Join 30 dedicated riders and crew as they set out for Yosemite from the Bay Area to launch the first, annual Muir’s Ride!
Muir’s Ride will follow a challenging but beautiful route from Pleasanton over the coast range, across the San Joaquin Valley, through the Sierra Foothills where it will end at the grand entrance to Yosemite Valley’s twin in Yosemite National Park: Hetch Hetchy Valley. This 4-day ride will be fully supported by a professional bike event company, allowing time to enjoy a cross-section of California, navigate some awesome and remote back roads and cruise a spectacular downhill run to the gates of Hetch Hetchy and Yosemite National Park.
Muir’s Ride will be organized in tandem with Muir’s March. Riders, backpackers and hikers will all arrive together at Hetch Hetchy on August 3rd to rally for its restoration (and eat!). The Restoration Festival is an ideal opportunity for those with non-cycling partners or families to join together for a unified purpose and come together to celebrate individual accomplishments for the final day of the event.
In order to participate, each rider must reach out to family and friends to raise awareness and funds for Restore Hetch Hetchy The minimum fundraising goal is $1400 and the $100 registration fee will be applied to that goal. Once you have surpassed your fundraising goal, your only job is to eat, sleep and ride in the shadow of John Muir's legacy.
Muir’s Ride includes:
- Nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Morning and afternoon SAG stops each day.
- Hotel room (double occupancy) for Night 2, and camping on Night 1 and with Muir's March one-day hikers on Night 3.
- Route cue sheets for each day of cycling.
- Rider and bike transport, if needed, back to San Francisco/Oakland.
- Commemorative victory shirt and certificate of accomplishment.
- An optional extra FREE night of camping in Yosemite after the ride.
To help you reach your physical and fundraising goals, you’ll be provided:
- Monthly coaching advice and training plan from CCSD.
- Personal fundraising webpage and fundraising ideas.
- Incentives for exceeding the fundraising minimum.
John Muir once called Hetch Hetchy Valley “a grand landscaped garden—one of Nature’s rarest and most precious mountain temples.” And it can be again. The mission of Restore Hetch Hetchy is to return the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park to its natural splendor while continuing to meet the water and power needs of all communities that depend on the Tuolumne River. The purpose of Muir's Ride is to generate important resources for this national campaign.
